Library Lines 1/9/2010

Winter is here and the library has plenty of indoor activities for adults and children of all ages! Kids Club takes place every Wednesday at 3pm for kids ages 5-11. Drop in for games, crafts and lots of laughs. For the younger kids we have Story Hour every Friday morning @ 10:15am. Kids ages 1-5 can stop in for stories, crafts, games, friends and more. If you are not able to make it to the morning story hour we have a Bedtime Story Hour on the 1st Thursday of every month @ 6:30pm. For families we are showing "Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs" Thursday, January 28th @ 6pm.

We have a lot coming up in February for adults and children. Our new program "Night on the Town" features a free showing of "Time Travelers Wife" and afterward you get a $2.00 coupon on refreshments at the Red Lion Pub. Also look out for Toddlers Tango, Valentine Crafts, two Beach Parties, Movie Matinee, Lil' Helper Baking, Family Movie Night & Karen Savoca & Pete Heitzman will be performing a free concert at the end of the month. Stop into the library or check our website for dates and times of upcoming programs.

Library Lines 12/4

With the holiday season in full swing, come by the library to get in the spirit. Give a book to a local boy or girl for the Community Christmas, by dropping off a wrapped book marked with the age and gender by Dec. 15. The long awaited "Wizard of Oz" and "Bob the Builder" raffle winner will be announced Dec. 16th. This includes 6 Barbie Collector "Wizard of Oz" dolls or 5 Brio "Bob the Builder" trucks and accessories. So hurry and buy your tickets, 1/ $1 or 5/$4.

Also, drop in and relax with some movies and programs: Watch, "Four Christmases" 12/10, "Rudolph" 12/15, and "Santa Buddies" 12/17, all at 6 pm. Kids can sign up to make Holiday Decorations on 12/11 @ 4 pm, and the Toddler Holiday Afternoon 12/18 @ 3:30 pm. The entire family can enjoy the Cookie Swap on 12/15 @ 5:30 pm, call 841-4651 for details.

The holidays are a busy time of year in publishing and that means we have many new and popular titles arriving almost daily. At an average price of $24 for a hardcover book, it pays to "shop" at your library! Browse our new books racks frequently before splurging on Amazon or at B&N.

Our new motto here at WPL is "great books-- any way you want them!" It is amazing to consider the many pathways over which an author's writings can reach us in this electro-digital era-- with breathtaking speed and ease! Most of our book offerings are still in hard-bound print on paper and it is hard to imagine, after thousands of years, that this publishing medium will ever disappear. But think about the alternative forms a book can now assume. Unabridged audio books once available only on tape or CD are now downloadable to personal computers or MP3 devices. Print is now accessible in "electronic ink"-- delivered to your computer screen, iPod or other electronic readers, instantly from Amazon-Kindle, Sony, Google Books and others.

While the shelves of WPL and our MidYork Library System are sagging with traditional volumes, in standard and LARGE TYPE, we invite you to explore the new media. We're happy to coach you in taking advantage of the wonderful whiz-bang technologies. Your library card is the key.

Getting in the Holiday Spirit

From elaborate bows, to new ways to package all those homemade goodies,
there will be a ton of ideas for you, for free, at the library!

Library Lines 10/16

With Halloween and the holidays upon us the library is getting ready for the festivities. After a great crowd for the ghost hunter we will be showing "Old Quarry & Other Haunted Places in CNY," a great spooky documentary about Fort Ontario, Beardslee Castle and more on Oct. 22nd at 6 pm. Kids can join us in their costumes for our Halloween Festival on Fri. Oct. 30th from 5-8 pm, with the Twin Magicians Magic Show at 6:30 pm.

In November, Val Schenk will teach a "Wreath Decorating" class Nov. 7 at 10:30 am. Evergreen wreaths will be provided. Get some ideas for great looking cards at "Homemade Cards" Nov. 3rd at 6:30 pm. Then, get ready for pie season with "Homemade Pies" on Nov. 14th at 11 am. Adults can bring their little helpers to make a pie from scratch. And, since it's the holiday season, learn to buy and sell on eBay with Travis on Nov. 9th at 4 pm. Sign ups required for the above programs.

We would especially like to honor our Servicemen and women with our wall of stars. Come in and add a star now through November 10th, and join us for a special Reception that night at 6pm. Happy start to your holidays!
